500,000 Additional Monkeypox Vaccines Ordered — Precision Vaccinations

Denmark-based Bavarian Nordic A/S announced today that the U.S. Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) had ordered an additional 500,000 doses of liquid-frozen JYNNEOS® vaccines for delivery in 2022.

With the previous order for 1.4 million doses of JYNNEOS from BARDA awarded in 2020, this new order brings the total U.S. vaccine inventory to nearly 2 million doses.

JYNNEOS (IMVANEX®, IMVAMUNE®) is a non-replicating smallpox vaccine and, since 2019, has been the only U.S. FDA-approved vaccine against monkeypox.

JYNNEOS is based on a live, attenuated vaccinia virus (Modified Vaccinia Ankara, MVA-BN), incapable of replicating in the human body, yet able to elicit a potent immune response.

Paul Chaplin, President and CEO of Bavarian Nordic, said in a press release issued on June 10, 2022, "The long-term commitment from the U.S. government to the development and procurement of JYNNEOS has provided the opportunity to act swiftly."

"Ensuring a rapid deployment of vaccines to mitigate the current monkeypox outbreak."

"We are pleased to support BARDA in their continued efforts to build and strengthen the national preparedness against smallpox and monkeypox."

The JYNNEOS vaccine is currently available in Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Nigeria, Portugal, Spain, the USA, the U.K., and various European countries.

As a consequence of the new order from BARDA and other government orders recently secured, Bavarian Nordic raised its financial result expectations for 2022, with revenue now expected to be between DKK 1,800 and 2,000 million (previously between DKK 1,400 and 1,600 million).

The global monkeypox virus outbreak has reached about forty countries impacting 1,582 individuals and their close-contacts, as of June 10, 2022.
