Auto manufacturing drives stamping trends in Canada

Macrodyne Technologies Inc., a manufacturer of heavy-duty hydraulic press machinery based in Concord, Ont., north of Toronto, has been supplying customized presses for many industries for the past 30 years. The company predominantly supplies some of the world’s largest Tier 1 and 2 auto parts manufacturers with presses to produce the body, structure, engine, driveline, and a variety of interior components.

The company has produced hydraulic presses up to 20,000 tons, fully automated hydraulic press lines, and die handling equipment for dies and moulds weighing more than 100 tons.

"The stamping market is investing more in fully automated press lines and custom solutions," said Kevin Fernandes, president/CEO, Macrodyne. "Automotive manufacturing continues to lead the demanding industry for stamping in Canada. We have supplied some complete systems in the leading Tier 1 and 2 auto parts manufacturers. Some automotive stamping shops are looking for higher-range presses and bed sizes than they have been used to in the past."

The stamping market currently is focused on lightweight materials to build lighter-weight automotive parts with complex geometries, particularly as there is an increased demand to reduce vehicles’ weight to improve fuel efficiency. Because of this trend, many manufacturers are looking for equipment and presses that can ensure structural integrity and meet the unique needs of the automotive industry.

"We also see increased demand from companies supplying the automotive electric vehicle industry as the need for zero-emission vehicles is rising," said Fernandes. "The federal government’s national pollution targets and incentives for emissions reduction are driving these changes."

The electric vehicle (EV) market has expanded significantly over the last few years, causing a shift in the types of components manufacturers are stamping.

Fernandes noted that plastic forming and metal forming presses are being used to produce body panels, battery covers, battery trays, full battery enclosures, and other lightweight parts for EVs, battery electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

"We understand the advanced technical requirements from the automotive industry," said Fernandes. "Our hydraulic presses stamp high-quality, lightweight, and safe materials that assure structural integrity and meet the unique needs of customers."
