Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Magnetic drills aren’t a new concept, however, not many brands have jumped on board to produce cordless versions yet. DeWalt proves it’s up for the challenge with its Cordless 20V Magnetic Drill Press. The design team did more than just make a corded tool cordless, though—there’s some real innovation built in.

This magnetic drill press uses DeWalt’s FlexVolt Advantage technology. While you can use any DeWalt 20V Max battery, when you use a FlexVolt DCB609G 9.0Ah battery, it gets up to 32% more power. With that kind of power, you can drill up to forty 13/16-inch holes in 1/2-inch steel per charge. At the top of its range, it has a capacity of up to 2-inch holes drilling through a max of 2 inches of structural steel.

Its cutting speed is up to 50% faster than the competition, according to DeWalt. 5 variable speeds combined with two mechanical gears give this mag drill a total of 10 speed settings to work with and a top speed of 810 RPM.

Additionally, many corded magnetic drill presses on the market require power to activate their magnets. The DeWalt Cordless Magnetic Drill Press features a permanent magnet that attaches to 1/4-inch steel or thicker without the need for an electrical charge. Even if your battery is completely dead, the tool won’t fall off.

This is a Tool Connect Chip-compatible tool. If you want the management and tracking benefits of Tool Connect, you can purchase the Chip separately and install it.

DeWalt also includes its E-Clutch system that detects motion and shuts down the motor in a bind-up situation.

The DeWalt DCD1623 retails as a bare tool for $2,099. It’s also available as part of a kit, including 2 9.0Ah FlexVolt batteries, a charger, and a carrying case for $2,499. DeWalt backs your purchase with a 3-year warranty and 1 year of free service.
