Stop everything, the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS has arrived - US Sports

At the house of Top Gear, we are not complicated. Porsche would put its flat 6 4.0 atmospheric 525 hp in a sweeper, we would continue to find that brilliant (hey, that’s an idea, by the way…). And the new 911 GT3 RS Type 992 doesn’t really need an introduction: when people writing a press release feel compelled to point out that their €234,977 car is « legal for the road », that’s already said a lot.

Nobody will therefore be surprised that the new GT3 RS is largely inspired by the racing 911 RSR and GT3 R, or that it generates 409 kg of downforce at 200 km/h, or even 860 kg at 285 km/h. Anyway, you just have to see this colossal biplane rear wing – which now overhangs the roof – and these fins cut into the sills to understand that it sticks to the road.

We are indeed talking about a machine that develops twice as much downforce as the old GT3 RS, and three times more than the current GT3. It’s great in curves, but it carries over to the drag. The top speed is affected: 296 km/h is 22 km/h less than a 992 GT3 plain and simple, 15 hp less powerful (and 15 kg lighter, the GT3 RS weighing just 1,450 kg ). On the other hand, the newcomer gains 2 tenths on the 0 to 100 km / h (3.2 s). Note that it is unfortunately only available in a PDK box, as is now the rule on the Porsche RS.

So as not to lose face on the straights of Kemmel or Döttinger Höhe in the wake of the 488 Pista or the 620R of your friends, you will be able to count for the first time on a DRS, in the manner of Formula 1. he wing is indeed mobile: with a simple press of a button on the steering wheel, a hydraulic system varies its angle of attack in favor of downforce or top speed.

It also acts as an airbrake during emergency braking, in case the big brakes of 408 mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear (or even 410 mm and 390 mm for the optional carbon-ceramic discs) do not would not suffice. The running gear has been revised, notably around a front track widened by 29 mm.

If you want even more, Porsche offers a free Clubsport package including a roll bar, six-point harnesses and a fire extinguisher. Take advantage of it, “Porsche” and “free” in the same sentence, it’s not every day. And don’t worry, you can still drop a few more tickets for the Weissach pack which includes a good dose of carbon everywhere (including on the arch, 6 kg lighter than the standard steel), and pallets in magnesium for an even more delectable click. Forged magnesium rims are also on the menu (- 8 kg).

Truth be told, the idea of someone having the means to afford a GT3 RS and doing so without ticking all those options – come on, at least the zero-euro Clubsport pack – would strike us as somewhat odd. But again, we have simple tastes…
